when given an empty list.

Converts an object (often a collection of objects) into an English list.

list(['banana', 'kiwi', 'mango'])
#=> " \"banana\", \"kiwi\", and \"mango\""

Given an empty collection, returns the empty string.

list([]) #=> ""
