Returns the original encoding of the document.

Returns:

  • (Encoding, nil)

Raises:

  • (Encoding::UndefinedConversionError) —

    if the source encoding cannot be converted to UTF-8

  • (ArgumentError) —

    if the document uses an unknown encoding with @charset
